Electronic Voting

As the voting officials
left the polling place
parking lot
their duty to the people
fraudulently
finished
electronic tallys
never
counted
the totals known
before a single vote
was
cast
my votes for the
Green Party
never to be counted
I took the flag
down
from the pole
old and tattered
torn and dusty
and
rose a new flag
to take its place
bright and vibrant
red, white and blue
singing with glorious
promise of
freedom
liberty
justice
but dead of all
life
simply a symbol
of
potential unrealized
I did it
precisely correct
in every detail but
with
farcical
respect
deeply loving
in my
hate
for they have stolen
the voice of the people
and we are left with
nothing
but a tri-colored
rectangle.
